Botox | Daxxify | Dysport | Jeuveau | Xeomin

Neurotoxins are one of the most popular injectable treatments for reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles without surgery. By temporarily relaxing targeted muscles, these treatments can smooth existing lines, help prevent deeper wrinkles from forming, and create a refreshed appearance.

Christopher Kepler, Aesthetic Nurse and Laser and Skin Specialist, has extensive experience with injectable treatments and works closely with patients to develop personalized treatment plans tailored to their goals. Under the medical direction of Dr. Desiree Wood, DNP, ARNP, AGPCNP-BC, patients receive customized care designed to achieve natural-looking results with Botox, Daxxify, Dysport, Jeuveau, and Xeomin.

What Are Neurotoxins?

Neurotoxins are injectable treatments used to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and lift by temporarily relaxing the underlying muscles. The most commonly used neurotoxins in office include Botox, Daxxify, Dysport, Jeuveau, and Xeomin.

These treatments work by blocking nerve signals to the muscles, preventing muscle contraction and thereby smoothing the overlying skin over time.

Neurotoxins are used to address various cosmetic concerns, including:

  • Forehead Lines
  • Frown or 11 Lines (Glabellar Lines)
  • Crow's Feet (Lines Around the Eyes)
  • Bunny Lines (Lines on the Nose)
  • Lip Lines (Smoker's Lines)
  • Marionette Lines (Corners of Mouth)
  • Chin Flattening and Dimpling
  • Neck Bands
  • TMJ and/or Facial Slimming (Masseters)

They can also be used for medical purposes, such as treating migraines and excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) on the face and other areas of the body, including the armpits, hands, feet, and buttocks.

Is Neurotoxin Treatment Right for You?

Neurotoxins offer a minimally invasive alternative to surgical procedures for wrinkle reduction. Treatments can be tailored to individual needs and desired outcomes, making them a versatile option for a wide range of cosmetic concerns.

Patients typically see noticeable improvements within a few days to a couple of weeks, with continued improvement over time and with regular maintenance treatments. The best neurotoxin for each patient depends on factors such as treatment goals, muscle strength, treatment area, and personal preference.

Regular use of neurotoxins can help prevent deeper wrinkles from forming over time. Whether the goal is treating existing lines or taking a preventative approach, treatment plans can be customized to support long-term aesthetic goals.

FAQ

While all five are neurotoxins derived from botulinum toxin type A, there are slight variations in their formulations, onsets, and durations.

  • Botox: The most well-known brand, widely used for both aesthetic and medical purposes. Results typically appear within 3-7 days, and effects last around 3-4 months.
  • Dysport: Known for spreading more easily, Dysport may be ideal for larger treatment areas, like the forehead. Results tend to appear within 2-3 days, and the effects last 3-4 months.
  • Daxxify: The newest neurotoxin on the market with an extended duration of action. Results can last up to 6 months or more, making it a longer-lasting alternative to other neurotoxins.
  • Jeuveau: Often referred to as "Newtox," Jeuveau is primarily used for aesthetic treatments. It has a similar onset time to Botox and lasts 3-4 months.
  • Xeomin: A "naked" version of botulinum toxin. Xeomin contains no additives or complexing proteins, which may reduce the risk of developing resistance over time. It works within 3-5 days and lasts about 3-4 months.

Common side effects are typically mild and may include redness, swelling, bruising at the injection site, and temporary muscle weakness. In rare cases, patients may experience a droopy eyelid or an uneven smile, which are usually temporary.

Results generally begin appearing within a few days after treatment. Botox, Dysport, Jeuveau, and Xeomin typically last 3-4 months. Daxxify offers longer-lasting effects, with results lasting up to 6 months or more for some patients.

Yes, it's possible to switch between neurotoxins. Some patients develop a preference for a product based on how it works for them. If you've been using one neurotoxin and want to try another, your injector can guide you through the transition.

  • Onset: Dysport tends to work the fastest (2-3 days), followed by Xeomin (3-5 days), Botox and Jeuveau (3-7 days), and Daxxify can take a similar timeframe as Botox or Jeuveau.
  • Duration: Botox, Dysport, Jeuveau, and Xeomin typically last 3-4 months. Daxxify offers longer-lasting effects, up to 6 months or more.

Neurotoxin treatments should be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Certain medical conditions and allergies may affect whether neurotoxin treatment is recommended. During a consultation, medical history and treatment goals will be reviewed to determine candidacy.

The frequency of treatment depends on how long results last and personal preference. On average, patients receive treatments every 3-4 months. If using Daxxify, treatments may be spaced out every 6 months or longer.

After treatment, avoid rubbing or massaging the injection sites, lying down for 4 hours, and engaging in strenuous activities for 24 hours. Following these instructions can help prevent the neurotoxin from migrating to unintended areas.

Yes. Neurotoxins are intended to relax specific muscles without completely freezing facial movement. The goal is a natural-looking result that allows for normal facial expression while reducing the appearance of wrinkles.

Neurotoxin treatments are priced by unit, and the number of units varies based on the desired outcome and the strength of the muscles being treated. Treatments are typically $14 per unit, and membership and loyalty programs may help reduce costs. A typical treatment session may range from approximately $280 to $850, depending on the treatment area and number of units required.
