What is Hylenex?
Hylenex is an enzyme known as hyaluronidase, used to dissolve hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers. Hyaluronic acid fillers, such as Juvederm and Restylane, are popular for reducing wrinkles and enhancing facial contours. However, if the results are unsatisfactory or complications arise, Hylenex can be injected to break down the hyaluronic acid, allowing it to be absorbed by the body and effectively reversing the filler’s effects.
When and why would you use Hylenex?
- Correcting Overfilling or Migration: Sometimes, too much filler may be injected, leading to an unnatural or undesirable appearance. Over time, filler may migrate due to dynamic expression.
- Fixing Asymmetry: If fillers are unevenly distributed, Hylenex can be used to correct the imbalance.
- Managing Complications: Rarely, fillers can cause adverse effects such as lumps, bumps, or vascular occlusion (a serious condition where a blood vessel is blocked). Hylenex can help mitigate these issues.
Do you dissolve everything?
Not always! We will try to preserve what we can when we can, but sometimes starting from scratch results in a more natural outcome.
What is the cost?
The cost of Hylenex treatment can vary widely depending on the area(s) and the amount of Hylenex required. On average, patients can expect to pay between $150 to $500 per session.
Is there downtime?
Hylenex is a minimally invasive procedure with relatively low downtime. Most patients can return to their normal activities immediately after treatment. However, there may be some temporary side effects, including:
- Redness
- Swelling
- Bruising
- Tenderness at the injection site
These side effects typically subside within a few days.
How many sessions do I need?
The number of Hylenex sessions required varies based on the amount of filler to be dissolved and the desired outcome. Generally, patients may need one to three sessions. We will assess the extent of the filler and the your response to the enzyme during the initial consultation and subsequent treatments.
Procedure Overview
- Consultation: A thorough evaluation is needed to determine the appropriate course of action.
- Preparation: The treatment area is cleaned, and a local anesthetic may be applied to minimize discomfort.
- Injection: Hylenex is carefully injected into the areas where filler needs to be dissolved.
- Post-Treatment Care: Patients receive aftercare instructions, which may include avoiding strenuous activities and certain medications to reduce the risk of bruising.
