What are NovaThreads?

PDO Threads

The thread lift procedure uses temporary PDO threads, a dissolvable suture, placed under the facial tissues to produce an instant lifting effect. The threads take effect by repositioning and tightening the skin. The threads dissolved in 3-6 months, but the PDO threads stimulate the body’s natural healing process by promoting new collagen production in the treated area(s).

NovaThreads are injectable PDO threads placed on a needle (sharp) or cannula (blunt) that come in several sizes and shapes including twisted, smooth and barbed threads to treat a variety of facial areas and concerns such as skin laxity, jowls, folds, fine lines, facial wrinkles and scars. NovaThreads can also be used to subtly and naturally sculpt facial skin to enhance your natural features, such as creating the illusion of more prominent cheekbones, upturning the outer corners of the eyes for a cat eye effect, or even lifting the brows. Additionally, it can provide contour and definition in areas like the lips and jawline for a more balanced and youthful appearance.

Pre-Treatment Guideline

Start with a consultation with our aesthetic providers to determine the best plan of action for your specific skin type. It is best to avoid all alcohol, caffeine and discontinue smoking for at least a week before the procedure as these things will increase downtime, delay healing and interfere with the anesthetic. All NSAIDs, turmeric, fish oil/Omega-3 products should be avoided as they may results in unnecessary bleeding leading to unwanted complications and side effects.

Post-Care Guidelines

Avoid ice as we need the swelling to start the healing process, but sleeping elevated on your back is ideal at a 45-degree angle for 5-7 days. Bruising is normal and expected so we recommend oral and topical Arnica to help reduce downtime.

Additionally, we want patients to limit facial motion for 24 hours, avoid facial creams or makeup for 48 hours, do not drink with a straw, eat soft foods or drink liquids for 7-10 days, avoid chewing gum for 2 weeks, avoid heavy exertion for 2-3 weeks and avoid pulling down on face or massaging it for 3 weeks.

Pros & Cons of a Thread Lift

  • Quick recovery time
  • Minimally invasive

Cons

  • Not as effective as other methods
  • Does not address excess skin
  • Lower success rate for more advanced fullness, laxity and/or poor expectations

Expected Results from a Thread Lift

The majority of people will notice minor immediate results directly after receiving a thread lift. As the face heals, new collagen forms in the treated areas creating a more obvious difference. While the results are more long term than some of the other facial rejuvenation options, such as surgical facelifts, the results are temporary and it is necessary to receive maintenance treatments every 6-12 months, depending on your specific age-reversal needs.

Texturized threads will achieve results more instantaneously than the smoother threads; however, it is important to remember that each thread type aims at producing collagen over a longer period, which is the overall goal of a thread lift procedure.

Side Effects from a Thread Lift

Most of the side effects of a thread lift occur in the first 24-48 hours after the procedure takes place, and will often resolve quickly. Some of the potential problems take a few weeks, or possibly even months, to resolve. These potential side effects include infection, bruising, swelling, tenderness, numbness, and slight asymmetry (small unevenness). Sometimes a suture will show itself just below the skin, as well.io

FAQ

NovaThreads are made from polydioxanone (PDO), a biodegradable material that has been used safely in medical sutures for many years. PDO threads are absorbed by the body over time while encouraging collagen production to firm and rejuvenate the skin.

NovaThreads are inserted into the skin using a fine needle. Barb and infinity threads provide an immediate lifting effect, while all threads stimulate collagen production, leading to improved skin texture and long-term tightening. As the threads dissolve naturally over several months, the newly formed collagen helps to maintain the lifting and firming effects.

NovaThreads can be used to treat a variety of facial and body areas, including:

  • Cheeks: To restore volume and lift sagging skin.
  • Jawline: For contouring and reducing the appearance of jowls.
  • Neck: To reduce sagging and improve skin tone.
  • Forehead: To smooth fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Eyebrows: For a subtle lift.
  • Nasolabial folds: To reduce the appearance of deep smile lines.
  • Marionette lines: To soften lines from the mouth to the chin.
  • Under-eye area: To address hollows and fine lines.

The results from NovaThreads can last up to 12-18 months. While the threads themselves dissolve over time, the collagen they stimulate helps maintain a more youthful and lifted appearance for a longer duration.

The procedure typically takes between 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the number of areas being treated. It’s a quick in-office treatment with minimal downtime.

Downtime is minimal. You may experience mild swelling, bruising, or tenderness for a few days following the procedure. Most patients can return to their normal activities within 24-48 hours but should avoid vigorous exercise or excessive facial movements for about a week.

You will notice an immediate lifting effect after the procedure, particularly with barb and infinity threads. Full results will continue to improve over 3-6 months as collagen production increases, leading to firmer and tighter skin.

Yes, NovaThreads can be combined with other aesthetic treatments such as dermal fillers, Botox, or skin resurfacing treatments to enhance overall facial rejuvenation. Your provider can recommend the best combination of treatments based on your goals.

While results from NovaThreads last up to 18 months, follow-up treatments can be scheduled as needed to maintain a lifted and rejuvenated appearance. Your provider can recommend the best maintenance schedule based on your skin’s needs.
